www.grandcanyonwest.com The Hualapai, meaning “People of The Tall Pines,” are native people of the Southwest. Traditionally hunter-gatherers, they inhabited an area of more than 5 million acres. Their homeland stretched from the Grand Canyon southward to the Santa Maria River and from the Black Mountains eastward to the pine forests of the San Francisco peaks. Today, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, created in 1883, is nearly 1000000 acres including 108 miles of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon. There are approximately 2100 enrolled members of the Hualapai Tribe and nearly half live in Peach Springs, the capital of the Hualapai Indian Reservation on Historic Route 66. Years of social and economic hardship led Hualapai Leaders to take measures that would lead to an independent future for their future generations. As a result, the Hualapai decided to open their land to visitors in 1988 creating Grand Canyon West as a tourism destination. Currently, multiple improvements including a “Boys and Girls Club” facility, a “Head Start” facility, and a Social Services building have been built in Peach Springs. Many more projects are planned for the future, all made possible by Hualapai Tourism.
Trip to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and Skywalk in Hualapai Indian Reservation in Peach Springs, Arizona, USA on Aug. 15. 2011. The Skywalk is located 4000 feet above the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, one of the world’s natural wonders. The Skywalk extends 70 feet over the Grand Canyon’s rim and weighs 1.2 million pounds. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6000 feet/1800 meters). Over two billion years of the Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. Recent evidence suggests the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to its present-day configuration.

Check out www.flymaverick.com for more information. This was an experience of a lifetime. Why waste an entire day on a bus when you can fly out in the Cadillac of the tour companies, Maverick Helicopter Tours. Located on the south end of the strip with a private entrance into the airport from Las Vegas Boulevard. Their number is 888-261-4414. We flew over Las Vegas, then over Boulder City and the Hoover Dam, we passed the West Rim SkyWalk, and landed down in the canyon for a short break complete with champagne and snacks, allowing for some fantastic photo opportunities.
This is a short video of our drive to the Grand Canyon (West Rim) on a rocky, unpaved road.
A visit at the famous Skywalk.
Hye everyone.. I’ll be visiting Grand Canyon this June and hope to book a tour from Vegas. I can see the South Rim tour is considerably cheaper than West Rim tour generally, but I don’t mind paying 40 bucks more if it is worth it. Any suggestion about it (including the tour company would be really appreciated) Thanks!
