Fremont Street Experience – Las Vegas

The most obvious and largest part of the Fremont Street Experience is the Viva Vision canopy and light show. The canopy towers 90 feet above the ground and spans the length of five football fields. Featuring more than 12 million LED modules and 555,000-watt sound system, the light show attracts tourists and locals alike.

The first light show was broadcast in 1995. Nearly a decade later in 2004, $17 million was invested in upgrading the Viva Vision canopy. Significant improvements were made and now it has 10 times higher resolution, resulting in clearer, sharper pictures. It can also display 16.7 million color combinations. The display is so sharp, live video can be broadcast on what is the world’s largest screen.

Viva Vision features shows like “Lucky Vegas,” celebrating the city’s famous icons, “Downtown Divas,” a tribute to a girls’ night out and “Speed, Smoke and Spinning Wheels,” which illustrates the world of fast-paced auto racing.

Psychedelic shows include “The Drop,” a journey through an underwater utopia filled with beautiful sea creatures and “Shag With a Twist,” an animated show that features Southern California artist Josh Agle’s unique artwork combining elements of “Austin Powers,” “The Jetsons,” tiki culture and ’60s imagery.

Visitors can also enjoy the patriotic show, “American Freedom” during Fourth of July.

Inside the Fremont Street Experience building, a master control room delivers all the magic to the Viva Vision light show. Technicians have only three minutes to load the show on the big screen. They are assisted by eight high-tech computers that intertwine the light, visual and audio systems.

Cameras are mounted on the actual Viva Vision screen and transmit a live video feed to a row of LCD screens inside the control room so technicians can monitor the show.

New Viva Vision shows are created each year and are rotated in and out. The Experience can choose from a library of about 15 shows at any given time.

A gigantic replica of the Great Sphinx stands in front of the 30-story dark pyramid of the Luxor Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, inviting guests into the Egyptian-themed resort, complete with swaying palms, statues of Ramses and a mock obelisk. Accessible by the Vegas monorail, the Luxor is at the south end of The Strip near the Las Vegas Convention Center. With its flashing beam of light on the apex and a towering atrium inside, the pyramid is a favorite among vacationing families, though the vast casino, nightly entertainment and gourmet dining guarantee adults a quintessential Las Vegas vacation.

Dramatically lit statues, towering pillars and polished wood furniture adorn the marble lobby. Pyramid guest accommodations are accessed by inclinators (elevators that ascend on an angle because of the building’s shape) and have slanted picture windows that look out onto The Strip. The hotels Egyptian theme is subtler in the guest rooms, which are decorated with comfortable, contemporary furnishings, though scattered touches such as hieroglyphic artwork or black lacquer inlay evoke the exotic vibe. Rooms and Las Vegas suites range from about 400 square feet to over 1000 square feet, the most luxurious of which offers marble soaking tubs, separate sitting areas and wet bars.

Las Vegas specialty restaurants like Fusia Luxor, offering Asian cuisine, and T & T, which serves Mexican food, are popular among families. Guests with a discerning palate enjoy award-winning Chef KC Fazel’s Tender Steak and Seafood Restaurant, and those seeking a unique dining and entertainment experience will enjoy the CatHouse, which blends a European bordello ambience and provocative entertainment with a multi-cuisine menu created by celebrity chef Kerry Simon.

The Luxor property is made up of several areas that house dining, entertainment and activity facilities. The Casino level boasts not only extensive gaming, but also has several restaurants, nightclubs and a five-acre pool complex complete with cabanas, swaying palms and poolside drink service. Vast and decadent, Lax is the celebrity-frequented dance club that feels red hot, while Liquidity is the sleek and modern high-concept lounge that has interactive aquatic video projections for a cool effect. Aurora bar and Flight gaming lounge are also on the Casino Level. The more family-friendly Atrium Level is home to a food court, an IMAX theater and traveling attractions and shows.

Nurture, the Spa at Luxor, harnesses the healing power of the earth with treatments and facilities inspired by nature. Nourishing facials, massages and treatments here include the Hyalunia Papaya Mango Facial, Chocolate Champagne Anti-aging Facial and Hot Stones Massage. Guests can relax in the eucalyptus steam room, dry sauna or whirlpool. The adjacent fitness center has all manner of circuit, cardio and strength training equipment. There are nearly 30 Las Vegas shops and boutiques of all descriptions on site, and in true Vegas form, the Luxor has a tasteful and classic wedding chapel.

Bringing a bit of refined luxury to the Las Vegas hotel scene, The Signature at MGM Grand is a residential-style, nonsmoking and non-gaming complex located within the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino property, but accessed by a separate gated entrance. Guests of The Signature have easy access to all the facilities of the MGM Grand, ensuring all of the action-packed entertainment, exciting gambling and gourmet dining that is expected on a Las Vegas vacation. However, at the end of the day, guests still benefit from the luxury and serenity of a boutique-hotel environment and all-suites accommodations.

Three distinct towers make up The Signature, each reflecting a different natural element: water, fire or earth. Decor in the lobby of each tower reflects the theme in color scheme and materials: blues and greens with aquatic-inspired artwork for Water; oranges, reds and ornamental light sculptures for Fire; and natural materials and a palette of browns for Earth. These Las Vegas suites continue the themes subtly with contemporary decor and comfortable, streamlined furnishings. Accommodations run from 550 square feet to 1,500 square feet, and each has a plush bed with 300-thread-count sheets, a separate living area with entertainment center and a kitchenette or kitchen equipped with state-of-the-art appliances by Sub-Zero, Miele and Bosch. Done in marble, en suite baths boast glass showers, whirlpool tubs and upscale bath products by June Jacobs.

Guests of The Signature have access to a plethora of Las Vegas restaurants at the MGM Grand next-door. On-site drinking and dining options include Delights, which has a deli-style menu of light bites and fresh cuisine, and The Lobby Lounge, which offers a full selection of beer, wine and cocktails. 24-hour room service is also available; guests who prefer to cook for themselves can make use of the in-room kitchens.

The Signature has a private heated pool complex and a fitness center with the latest cardio and weight training equipment. Guests of The Signature can schedule in-suite massage and body treatments or head next-door to the Spa at the MGM Grand.

Nightlife at the neighboring MGM Grand centers on the vast casino, which boasts hundreds of slot machines, cards, table games and sport and race wagering. Clubs, bars and lounges pour drinks and play music into the early morning hours; shows include Cirque du Soleils KÀ, cabaret dancing at Crazy Horse Paris and performances by world-class entertainers, including Aerosmith and David Copperfield.

The Signature has two business centers and 3,837 square feet of meeting space with two ultramodern boardrooms and four meeting rooms outfitted with audio/visual equipment and Internet connections. The premises can be adapted to suit birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other celebrations. Banquet and catering services are also available.
